It is ironic that chocolate is associated with luxury, treats, indulgence and love. Yet, the cultivation of cocoa is fraught with environmental and social troubles. The huge demand for chocolate has driven less discriminating farmers and companies to mass-produce cocoa plants by forcing them into the sun to ripen quickly. They also use artificial fertilisers and pesticides that degrade the soil and forest land. Furthermore, many cocoa farmers are paid a pitifully low wage - and child labour on cocoa farms is worryingly commonplace...

Caring Cocoa

However, Essential ensures that its chocolate spreads are made from cocoa that is cultivated as nature intended in Ghana using organic methods to protect the environment. The beans are harvested and processed without the use of slave or child labour and no GMOs or artificial additives are used. The whole process is also approved by the Fairtrade Foundation that ensures both the farmers and their workers are protected and paid a fair wage. The cocoa powder is blended with fairtrade cane sugar and just a little fairtrade vanilla to create the luxurious trio of spreads ready for you to enjoy on toast, in sandwiches, spread onto cakes or simply (naughtily!) straight from the jar...
